In 2016, Spirit Run changed its 5k and 10k courses to make them faster than ever. The 5k and 10k courses no longer have an out and back before the finish line and both finish on a decline.
In 2016, Spirit Run added an Elite and Sub Elite Mile course. In 2017, Spirit Run is adding a second course so males and females race on separate courses and have separate finish lines.
These courses are very fast! They proceed point to point on opposite sides of the median on Newport Center Drive, and primarily on a decline.
Spirit Run’s new Dog Mile will also take place on one of these courses.
The Open Mile and Youth 1/4 to 1 Mile races are out and back courses that finish on a decline.
All races other than Elite, Sub Elite, and Dog Miles start in front of Regal Cinemas located at:
Regal (Edwards Big 6) Cinemas
300 Newport Center Drive
Newport Beach, CA92660
The Elite, Sub Elite, and Dog Miles start near the intersection of Newport Center and San Nicolas.
All courses finish on Newport Center just before the intersection of Newport Center and Anacapa.
All races start and finish near the Regal Cinemas:
Regal (Edwards Big 6) Cinemas
300 Newport Center Drive
Newport Beach, CA92660

The Elite and Sub Elite Mile races are Bring Back the Mile Featured Events. They both take place on very fast, point to point courses on Newport Center Drive. Each race has separate male and female courses and finish lines. Only those meeting qualifying standards may participate as follows:
Male: qualifying time is 4:30
Female: qualifying time is 5:00
Sub Elite Mile
Male and Female Age 59 and younger: qualifying time is 7:00 minute mile
Male and Female Age 60 and older: qualifying time is 8:00 minute mile
Competitors who finish in a time that is more than allowed as per above time requirements will be disqualified and will not be eligible to win medals or prizes.
We’ve added the NEW dog mile (attached by leash to humans, of course!) so you can run with your four-legged friends. It will take place after the Sub Elite Mile on the same course.
This will be a timed race for competitive runners. Casual runners and joggers are also welcome as well so long as they can finish in 15 minutes.
Please, no aggressive dogs. All dogs must remain on leash at all times.
Anyone age 13 and older may compete in this out and back course on Newport Center Drive including joggers and those qualified to race the Elite or Sub Elite Mile.
5K is a race around Fashion Island. The 5K race starts followed by a brief delay by the 5k Family Walk. The Adult 5k run is for post high school runners age 19 and older.
5K participants expecting to finish after 9:15 a.m. may be asked to walk on the sidewalk to accommodate access to Fashion Island. We appreciate your cooperation.
10k race is essentially two loops of the 5k.
10k competitors who are not on a thirteen minute per mile pace may be asked by race officials to move to the sidewalk to finish their race. The Elite Mile competitors will begin approaching the finish line area just after 7:45 a.m. and we would like the course to be clear for them. Our City permit restricts the time period that we can officially close the city streets. This restriction doesn’t allow us to have more time between the 10k and the Elite Mile. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Run 5K and 10K – times combined and ranked.
5K FAMILY WALK
A 5K walk around Fashion Island for all ages. Walkers start at the back of the 5k race and there is a delayed start for the family walk. Participants expecting to finish after 9:30 a.m. may be asked to walk on the sidewalk to the line to accommodate access to Fashion Island . We appreciate your cooperation.
Separate races ranging from ¼ mile to 1 mile for ages 4 – 19. Children younger than age 4 may participate in 1/4 mile at the discretion of their parents with signed waiver.
This race is for high school aged and younger (i.e, age 19 and under) (grade level mandatory). If you are 19 years old but have graduated high school, Spirit Run considers you an adult who should compete in the adult races and pay adult pricing.
Parents/guardians of youth in this event may register for the Adult 5k but run in the Youth 5k, but must start in the back and are not eligible for awards. No other adults may run in the Youth 5k.
Open to youth who meet qualifying times above under Adult Sub Elite Mile description and who are mature enough to compete against serious, adult athletes without help from their parents.
(Youth only Born 2002-2010) – Combined Entry into the Spirit Run on race day & the Frank E. Anderson Memorial Newport Beach Elementary Track Meet on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Corona del Mar High School. See registration form for further details about the Track Meet.
